BRA FAQ

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY BRA FITS?

Your bra should feel snug but comfy — like a supportive hug, not a wrestling match! No spillage, gaping, or digging allowed. If you’re constantly tugging, shifting, or adjusting, it’s definitely time for a proper fitting!

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET FITTED FOR A BRA?

We recommend getting a bra fitting every 6 to 12 months. Your body can change with things like weight shifts, pregnancy, or hormonal changes — and even small changes can make a big difference in how your bra fits and feels. Plus, bras don’t last forever! Depending on how many you have in rotation, they can start to lose shape and support after about six months. A regular fitting keeps you comfy, supported, and feeling your best!

HOW LONG SHOULD MY BRA LAST?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to how long a bra should last — it really depends on a few key things. How many bras do you have in rotation? Wearing the same one every day wears it out faster, so having a few to switch between helps them all last longer. How you care for your bras matters too. We recommend using a gentle detergent like our in-store favourite, Eucalan, and washing every two wears to keep body oils and bacteria from breaking down the fabric and elastic. And of course, the brand matters! High-quality bras like Empreinte are designed to last longer than budget-friendly options, and with proper care, they can easily last 6 months or more.

HOW DO I WASH MY BRA?

To keep your bras in top shape, we recommend washing them every 2 wears using a gentle, no-rinse detergent — like Eucalan.

  1. Fill a basin or sink with room temperature water (hot water = harsh on delicate fabrics).
  2. Add a splash of no-rinse detergent and swirl it around.
  3. Gently rub areas that collect more sweat and oils, like under the arms and band area.
  4. Lightly press the water out — don’t wring or twist those cups!
  5. Hang to dry preferably by the center gore (the piece between the cups) to keep its shape.

A little extra care goes a long way in keeping your bras comfy, supportive, and long-lasting!

HOW SHOULD MY BRA BAND FIT?

Your bra band should feel snug and secure — not too tight, and definitely not loose. It should sit level all the way around your body and fasten on the loosest hook when it’s new. That way, you can tighten it over time as the band stretches.

A quick fit check: Slide two fingers under the band near your ribs, just under your armpit. You should be able to pull slightly — there should be a little give, but not too much. It should feel snug (yes, maybe snugger than you’re used to!), but not tight or uncomfortable.

If your band is riding up in the back, it’s too big — time for a fitting!

WHY DO MY BRA STRAPS KEEP FALLING DOWN?

Straps that fall down can mean your bra is too big, worn out, or not the right style for your shoulders.

Make sure to adjust or tighten your straps every time you wear your bra — they should sit snugly on your shoulders without digging in. When buying a new bra, check that there's plenty of room to tighten the straps over time as the bra naturally stretches.

If you have sloped shoulders, try a multiway bra or one with a J-hook to convert it into a racerback — it helps keep straps in place. We also carry silicone strap holders that do the trick!

WHY IS MY BRA UNDERWIRE POKING ME?

If your underwire is poking or digging in, chances are the cup size is too small or the bra style doesn’t suit your shape. A properly fitted underwire bra should feel supportive — never painful!

With the right fit, the wire should sit flat against your chest and follow the natural curve of your breast without pressing into any tissue.

WHY DO THE CUPS OF MY BRA GAPE OR WRINKLE?

If there’s space in your cups, they’re likely too big, or the style isn’t a good match for your breast shape.

WHY DOES MY BRA RIDE UP ON MY BACK?

If your band is creeping up your back, it’s a sign it’s too loose — and that means it’s not doing its job!

About 80% of your bra’s support comes from the band, not the straps. Think of it as the anchor that holds everything in place. For proper support, your band needs to fit snugly and stay level all the way around.

Here’s a quick fit check: Stand sideways in the mirror. Your band should line up with the root of your breast — right where the underwire or bottom of the cup sits in the crease of your bust. It shouldn't ride higher or lower than that. If it does, it’s time for a better fit!

WHAT ARE SISTER SIZES? HOW DO THEY WORK?

"Sister sizing" means finding a different bra size that has the same cup volume, but a different band size. This allows you to adjust how the band feels while keeping the same support.

For example, a 34C and a 32D are sister sizes — they offer the same cup volume, but the 34C has a larger band and the 32D has a smaller band. You can switch between these sizes to find a better fit depending on how you prefer the band to feel on your body!

HOW DO I STOP MY BRA STRAPS FROM DIGGING IN?

If your straps are digging in, it’s a sign that your band isn’t doing enough of the work. A properly fitted bra should distribute the weight evenly, so your shoulders aren’t carrying the load.

When shopping for a new bra, look for styles with wider straps or comfort straps (those with padding). These designs help distribute the weight of your breasts more evenly, reducing strain on your shoulders and preventing that painful digging

WHAT ARE THE BEST BRAS FOR A LARGE BUST?

A cut & sewn bra provides superior shape and support. These bras are crafted with multi-part seamed cups that lift, define, and bring the breasts inward, creating a beautifully rounded shape and a flattering, slimmed appearance.

At Victoria’s Attic, we carry top-quality brands that offer not only incredible lift and support but also all-day comfort — because you deserve to feel amazing in your bra!

I ORDERED MY USUAL BRA SIZE BUT IT DOESN'T FIT

Sizing can vary from brand to brand, meaning you might be a different size in each one — just like how jeans fit differently! Each bra style is unique, and what works in one brand might not work in another.

That’s why we offer personalized fittings — to ensure you get the perfect size every time. Shopping online? No worries! Reach out to us, and we’ll help you find the right bra for your unique fit. It’s totally normal to wear different sizes in different styles or brands!

WHY DON'T YOU GIVE OUT BRA SIZES?

At Victoria’s Attic, we use bra sizes as a reference in our system to help guide you in finding the right fit in our boutique. However, our sizing may not always align with other stores because we adjust the sizes to make fitting easier for our team.

In the past, we've had clients order bras (not from our site) based on the size we provided, only to find the fit wasn’t quite right. This can be frustrating, but it’s important to remember that bra sizes can vary between styles and brands. That's why we always recommend coming in for a personalized fitting to get the best fit, every time!

HOW MANY BRAS SHOULD I HAVE?

The number of bras you need depends on your lifestyle, but we believe every woman should have at least four to five essential bras in her collection:

  1. A black or dark-colored bra — for everyday wear.

  2. A neutral or light-colored bra — for versatility.

  3. A sports bra — for support during physical activity.

  4. A lounge bra or wireless bra — perfect for comfort, and for bustier women, this could also double as a sleep bra.

  5. A beautiful lace bra — for a touch of luxury and confidence.

Among these, one should be a smooth bra that works well under light fabrics. Having multiple bras will also lengthen each bras life and wearability.

MASTECTOMY & BREAST PROSTHETIC FAQ

DO I NEED AN APPOINTMENT FOR A MASTECTOMY OR PROSTHETIC FITTING?

We highly recommend booking an appointment so we can give you the time, privacy, and one-on-one attention you deserve. This ensures a certified fitter is available to guide you through every step of the process.

During the booking process, we’ll ask for a few basic details—such as the type of surgery you’ve had, what products you may be looking for, and if you’d like to begin the insurance coverage process. This helps us prepare the right styles, sizes, and paperwork ahead of your visit, so you feel supported from the moment you walk in.

WHAT TYPES OF BREAST PROSTHETICS DO YOU CARRY?

We carry a wide selection of breast prosthetics in a variety of shapes, sizes, weights, and skin tones—including symmetrical, asymmetrical, partials, and custom options. Our certified fitters will help you find the one that feels right for your body and lifestyle.

CAN I BE FITTED FOR A PROSTHETIC IF I'VE HAD RECONSTRUCTION, A LUMPECTOMY, OR PARTIAL SURGERY?

Absolutely. We offer solutions for every stage of recovery and every type of surgery. Whether you're looking for a full form, balance shaper, or a soft post-surgical option, we have products designed to restore symmetry and comfort.

ARE YOUR FITTERS CERTIFIED FOR POST-MASTECTOMY AND PROSTHETIC FITTINGS?

Yes. Our team includes certified Amoena, Anita, and Trulife fitters trained in post-surgical care, prosthetic fittings, and garment support. We’re here to answer your questions and ensure a safe, comfortable experience.

IS THERE A PRIVATE SPACE FOR MASTECTOMY & BREAST PROSTHETIC FITTINGS?

Yes. We have a dedicated private fitting room for post-surgical clients. It’s a calm, welcoming space where you can feel at ease while we walk you through every step of the process with dignity and care.

ARE BREAST PROSTHETICS AND POST-SURGICAL BRAS COVERED BY INSURANCE OR HEALTH BENEFITS?

In many cases, yes! Most extended health benefit plans cover breast prosthetics and pocketed bras. We can provide a detailed receipt and help guide you through the paperwork process if needed.

COMPRESSION FAQ

WHAT IS COMPRESSION WEAR, AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Compression garments (like socks, sleeves, stockings, or wraps) apply gentle pressure to specific parts of the body to help improve circulation, reduce swelling, and support muscles or veins. Think of it as a supportive hug that helps your body feel and perform better.

WHO SHOULD WEAR COMPRESSION GARMENTS?

Compression wear can benefit a wide range of people, including:

  • Those with varicose veins or venous insufficiency

  • Individuals on their feet all day (nurses, retail workers, etc.)

  • Athletes or those recovering from injury

  • Post-surgical patients (especially after procedures like liposuction, mastectomy, vein surgery, or orthopedic surgery)

  • Pregnant women experiencing swelling

  • Anyone managing lymphedema or chronic swelling

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MEDICAL-GRADE AND READY-MADE COMPRESSION?

Over-the-counter or ready-made compression garments provide mild support and are great for everyday use. Medical-grade compression (measured in mmHg) is stronger and often prescribed or recommended by a healthcare provider. We specialize in both — and we’re trained to help fit you properly.

DO I NEED A PRESCRIPTION FOR COMPRESSION GARMENTS?

You don’t always need one — but if your doctor recommends compression wear for a medical condition (like lymphedema or post-surgical healing), they might write a prescription. Bonus: Some health insurance plans cover your compression wear - check with your provider!

WHAT'S INVOLVED IN A COMPRESSION FITTING?

A compression fitting with us is all about comfort, dignity, and getting the right support for your body. We start with a conversation to understand your needs, and then take precise measurements at key points to ensure the garment works effectively — and feels great.

Prefer privacy? No problem — we offer completely private fitting appointments. Every step is explained as we go, so you feel informed, comfortable, and cared for throughout the process. It’s a calm, respectful experience designed to help you feel confident and supported.

HOW LONG SHOULD I WEAR COMPRESSION SOCKS OR GARMENTS EACH DAY?

It depends on your needs. Some people wear them all day during waking hours, while others only need them during travel or work. Post-surgery or medical use may come with specific instructions. Please speak to your health care provider for a tailored plan.

ARE COMPRESSION GARMENTS HOT OR ITCHY?

Not the ones we carry! Modern compression wear is made from soft, breathable, moisture-wicking materials (like microfibre blends or bamboo), making them comfortable even in warmer weather. We also have options for sensitive skin.

CAN COMPRESSION SOCKS OR SLEEVES HELP WITH TRAVEL SWELLING OR JET LAG?

Yes! They're fantastic for long flights or road trips. They help prevent swelling and lower the risk of blood clots (DVT), especially when you’re sitting for extended periods.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY COMPRESSION GARMENTS?

Hand washing or using a gentle cycle with mild detergent works best. Avoid hot water, fabric softener, and dryers — they can damage the elastic fibers. Find care instructions in product descriptions or within the compression packaging.

HOW LONG DO COMPRESSION GARMENTS LAST?

With proper care, they typically last 4–6 months of regular use. If you notice they’re easier to pull on or losing their snugness, it’s time for a refresh.
